How We Foster Mathematical Thinking
At Celebree School® of Montgomeryville, our day care focuses on the whole child, including helping to instill strong mathematical thinking skills. In fact, we make math fun, right from the start, so children can learn early mathematical concepts in a practical, everyday way, setting them up for success in kindergarten and beyond. Here’s how we do it.
How Our Day Care Instills Early Math Skills
Our curriculum integrates the Seven Domains of Learning. One of those domains is Mathematical Thinking and through it, we focus on:
- Number sense. This includes understanding numbers and their relationship with each other, as well as in real-world situations. To start, we’ll count on fingers and toes, then count snacks, like carrot sticks, and even create paper chains to count the days to a birthday or holiday.
- Measurements. We help children learn to measure the size, length, weight, and amount of an object. We also start to focus on measuring time, including the days, weeks, months, and years.
- Spatial awareness. We’ll teach children about sizes and shapes, like points, lines, surfaces, and solids. Children will also learn the difference between near and far, as well as start to understand the concept of directional terms.
- Patterns. We’ll begin to explore the world of patterns and the logical order they represent. We do this in a familiar way, such as helping your child identify a pattern on their shirt, or in their daily routine.
We will be counting, measuring, and reporting data in a fun-filled, hands-on way. In the process, we will use concepts your child understands, such as food, to introduce them to early math skills and help them to develop in mathematical thinking.
