Behind Children’s Behavior: Understanding the Many Influences | Celebree School of Herndon-West Reston

We often hear about child behavior as a vague concept in our daily lives. However, this concept offers a deeper explanation in the field of education. The challenge with understanding child behavior emerges from it being a very dynamic and complex aspect of human development. It is important to note that child behavior not only has different internal and external motivators but also changes according to different settings and situations.

A child’s behavior includes everything a child does: observable actions and reactions such as how they play, communicate, and interact with others around them. These observable actions and reactions can be impacted by many factors such as behavior disorders, disabilities, or simply a lack of teaching. This article will explore all factors that might have a long- or short-term impact on child behavior.

Besides diagnosed disabilities, there are numerous factors that influence children’s behavior that can be summarized in five major points: Genetics and Biology, Environment, Parenting Style, Peer Influence, and Media and Technology (Int J Sch Cogn Psycho, 2024). While inherited personality traits influence children’s temperaments and their predisposition to certain behaviors such as easy irritation and impulsivity, it is worth saying that Family dynamics and cultural influences play a crucial role in shaping children’s behavior. Parenting and communication styles and practices are undeniably the most crucial factors that contribute to a child’s behavior outcomes. The strategies parents and caregivers use play a significant role in the guidance process.

As children grow older and take their first steps in social contexts, peer influence can interfere with the previously mentioned factors and make a positive or negative impact on children’s personality that translates into their everyday behaviors. Therefore, the importance of monitoring social interactions in social and academic settings is as important as monitoring children’s virtual interactions and use of media and technology. Exposure to this last can restrict self-regulation and social interactions.

In this context, it is of crucial importance for parents and educators to understand how to navigate these factors to be in a better place to guide children’s behaviors. During this process, observation and tracking progress are key to developing the most effective strategies for guidance.
