From Screen Time to Play Time: Why Hands-On Learning Matters at Celebree School

Did you ever play cops and robbers? It’s a version of tag where the “cops” catch “robbers” and force them to sit on the couch for three whole minutes while they catch other robbers. Then the robbers help each other escape the couch-jail. The robbers create elaborate heists and plans while the police work as a team and use their observation skills to catch all the robbers, walking the calm ones to jail and dragging away the rowdy ones.

I loved that game. When I was a cop, the robbers were bad. When I was a robber, the cops were bad. I got to see how both sides work. When I caught someone or let someone out, I felt a sense of accomplishment that I won something. When my plan worked, I was on top of the world. Then it was time for lunch. We were all children again, sitting at the table, replaying what happened, telling our moms that “he scratched me when he grabbed my arm and I still escaped.”

Then I grew up. And I stopped playing. I got a phone.

Now fast forward, your child has a tablet. This technology is so powerful that all play is all DFY (Done For You). Mark Rober shows your kids how engineering can solve problems. Danny Go shows your kids new dance moves. Bluey shows your kids fun and sympathy through her adventures and interactions. Tablets are a powerful tool to show things.

When does your kid get a chance to do things?

Picture this: Your child wants to play with blocks, but there’s already three friends there and there’s only two friends in sensory and one in science. What should your child do? Or it’s time for art and there’s no more of the purple paint in the bottle. Your child really, really wanted to paint with purple and can feel tears coming in! What will happen next? Or perhaps your child saw that a not-really-a-friend had a bathroom accident… how should your child react?

Celebree School makes sure that your child plays, and through that, learns frustration tolerance, self-control, empathy, teamwork, conflict resolution, connection, kindness, gratitude, and a bunch of other things!

Don’t you want your children to build friendships that last? Don’t you want your children to learn how to build resilience that will get them to their goals? Don’t you want your child to be ready for opportunities that test their potential?

Then let them play and have fun at Celebree! Every day is a fun day at Celebree because “all the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players.” Let your children play different parts of their personalities so they can take risks in a safe environment. What’s a safer way to play than at Celebree?
