How We Foster Mathematical Thinking

How Our Day Care Instills Early Math Skills

We follow a curriculum that is built around the Seven Domains of Learning. One of the domains is Mathematical Thinking and, from the very start, we’ll introduce and explore various mathematical concepts with your child.

We do this in a real-world way, one that brings math to life, so children are engaged from the start. In the process, we focus on:

• Number sense. We help children start to make sense of numbers and their relationship with each other. We do this in the early stages by counting fingers and toes. As your child gets older, we’ll count everything from carrot sticks and crackers to days until a special event, making paper chains to count down.
• Patterns. We also introduce children to the concept of patterns, helping them make sense of the world around them. This includes everything from visual patterns, such as on an article of clothing, to patterns in their routine. 
• Measuring objects and time. We make measuring fun and help children learn about the basics of measuring everything from size and length to height, weight, and even the amount of an object. We also cover the concept of time and help children learn about telling time and learning the days of the week. 
• Spatial awareness. Another area we focus on involves spatial awareness, which includes sizes, shapes, points, and lines. It also includes other concepts, like near and far, so children understand their relationship to objects.
