There are many kinds of milestones in life. Birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, the list goes on and on. But when it comes to early education, we look at developmental milestones, and it literally is the foundation of everything we do. One of the things that I can really appreciate about our curriculum is how important milestones are. The Creative curriculum has a new feature for the infant and toddler curriculum. When you come in on the very first day and then once a month after that until your child is 2 there are a few questions that you must answer about your child. This helps to tailor the curriculum to your child to help them get to their next milestone!
I don’t know about you, but it is the little things in life that really get me excited. I love how the Creative Curriculum brings school and home together. We all know that it truly is a partnership. The goal in doing this is because when it comes to infants, we are not teaching them the ABC’s and 123’s just yet we are looking at milestones. Making sure that they are reaching all the appropriate ones at the right time so that we can make sure our little people are staying on track and getting all of the things that they need.
For an infant at two months, they should calm down when you pick them up. They should also look at your face and seem happy when you come into their sight and smile when you talk to them. They should also be able to make sounds other than crying and react to loud noises. A two-month-old person should also be able to watch you as you move and look at a toy for several seconds. They should also be able to hold their heads up when laid on their tummy, move both arms and legs and open their hands up briefly. All these milestones are important because we want to make sure that if something is missed that the child gets everything that they need to thrive.
Sometimes it can be as simple as vitamin deficiency and that can be easily corrected. Or it could be something small that turns into something bigger if left untreated. With these things you never know why any time we see that a child is hitting a milestone we want to document and communicate with the parents. That way they can talk with their pediatrician and see what needs to be done. We only want our kids to be as happy and healthy as they can possibly be! It is literally our job to make your lives easier.
There are milestones at every age and everyone is important. When milestones aren’t reached it lets us know that we need to do something different to support that child so that they can thrive. That’s why I especially love the Creative Curriculum because it gives the teachers specific things to work on with the child to get them to the next milestone. Plus, it helps us identify when something is not being reached. Then we can discuss with the parents what the next steps are. The Creative Curriculum helps us to identify those milestones and keeps us on the right track to move to the next milestone.
