A toy sits just beyond your baby’s reach. At first, they may simply look at it. A few months later, they may stretch toward it, shift their body, or try again after missing. Later still, they may crawl or scoot across the floor to get it.

These moments are simple, but they show how much changes during the first year. As babies gain more control over their bodies and become more aware of what is happening around them, they have more ways to act on their curiosity.

Problem-solving in infancy does not look like it does for an older child. It often begins with watching, reaching, repeating an action, searching, moving, and trying a different approach. These baby milestones develop gradually, and every child follows their own timeline.

During the newborn stage, babies rely heavily on the people around them. Much of their movement is still reflexive, and their ability to act on something that catches their attention is limited.

Around 1 month, babies may briefly focus on a nearby face and react to voices or other sounds.

By about 2 months, many watch people move, look at a toy for a short time, smile during interaction, and briefly lift their head during tummy time.

Around 3 months, babies may become more interested in their hands, bring them toward their mouth, and begin swiping toward nearby objects.

At this stage, curiosity is often easier to see than purposeful action. Your baby notices something interesting before they have many ways to reach it.

By around 4 months, many babies swing toward toys, hold an object placed in their hand, and bring their hands toward their mouth.

A baby who once watched a toy may now try to make contact with it.

Around 5 months, reaching often becomes more deliberate. Your baby may adjust an arm, stretch farther, or try again after missing the first time.

By about 6 months, many babies reach for toys they want, roll, laugh, and become much more active during play.

That growing ability to act on an interest is an important change. Seeing something and wanting it is one step. Figuring out how to get closer to it is another.

Reaching may seem straightforward, but it brings several developing abilities together.

Your baby has to notice the object, judge where it is, move an arm toward it, and coordinate the hand well enough to make contact. If the first attempt does not work, another may follow.

By 6 to 7 months, babies often have more control over grabbing and handling objects. They may turn a toy, shake it, mouth it, drop it, or reach for it again.

They are not solving a complicated puzzle. They are learning that their own movements affect what happens next.

During 7 and 8 months, sitting often becomes steadier.

That new position changes play. A baby sitting upright may have both hands free to handle toys, reach in different directions, turn toward an interesting sound, or shift their body to get closer to something.

A toy may be passed between hands, banged against another object, turned over, or dropped and retrieved. The milestone is not only that a baby sits. Sitting gives them more choices about what to do once they are there.

Later in the first year, babies become increasingly interested in objects that are no longer directly in front of them.

By around 9 months, many babies look for something that falls out of sight.

A younger baby may watch a spoon drop from the high chair and then turn their attention elsewhere. A few months later, they may lean over and look toward the floor.

That search is a small but meaningful change. Your baby now has another way to respond when something interesting disappears.

Around this age, many babies also bang two objects together, transfer objects between their hands, sit without support, and get themselves into a sitting position.

During roughly 8 to 10 months, some babies begin crawling. Others scoot, creep, roll, or develop another way to get around.

The exact method matters less than the growing ability to move toward something that has caught their attention.

A favorite toy is across the room. A familiar person sits a few feet away. Something interesting is happening nearby. Mobility gives babies more freedom to decide where to go next.

Crawling itself does not happen on one required schedule. Some babies spend a long time crawling, while others use a different form of mobility or move toward standing relatively quickly.

Later infancy is full of actions that seem to invite the question, “What happens if I do this?”

A baby may shake a toy and hear a sound. Bang two objects together and get a louder one. Drop something and watch it fall. Make a noise and wait for an adult to respond.

Sometimes the same experiment happens many times.

These repeated actions give babies a chance to notice patterns between what they do and what happens around them.

During 10 and 11 months, babies often become more mobile, more precise with objects, and more deliberate in how they get another person’s attention.

They may move toward something they want, pull themselves into a new position, imitate a familiar action, or use a sound or gesture to continue an interaction.

By around 12 months, many babies:

Independent walking is not required by the first birthday. Babies reach that milestone on different timelines.

What has changed most is the number of options available. A baby nearing age 1 has far more ways to investigate an idea than the newborn who could only watch.

Everyday play already offers plenty to figure out.

A toy rolls slightly out of reach. A rattle makes a sound when moved. A sturdy book opens and closes. An object disappears behind something. A familiar caregiver responds when the baby vocalizes or gestures.

There is no need to deliberately frustrate a baby or create difficult challenges. Safe, age-appropriate opportunities to move and explore are enough.
