It\u2019s a designated area where children can go to breathe, relax, and regain composure when they feel upset, frustrated, or overwhelmed.<\/p>\n Teachers guide children to use calming strategies such as:<\/p>\n Deep breathing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Positive affirmations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Looking at family pictures<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Using emotion cards or stones<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n For example, if a child becomes frustrated when a tower falls, their teacher may gently guide them to the Safe Place to take a few breaths and reset before returning to play.<\/p>\n The Safe Place is very different from a traditional time-out.<\/p>\n A time-out often isolates children and focuses on what they did wrong. The Safe Place, on the other hand, helps children learn<\/em> \u2014 it encourages them to identify what they\u2019re feeling, understand why they feel that way, and practice calming themselves down.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not a punishment.
