Before babies can move toward what interests them, much of their world comes to them. A familiar face leans into view. A toy is placed nearby. A new sound causes them to turn their head.<\/p>\n
That changes quickly during the first year. As babies gain more control over their bodies, they also gain new ways to explore. Reaching lets them touch what catches their attention. Rolling changes their view. Sitting makes it easier to play with both hands. Eventually, mobility allows them to move toward something they want to investigate.<\/p>\n
These baby milestones are general guideposts rather than a schedule every child will follow exactly.<\/p>\n
Early physical development is about more than getting from one place to another.<\/p>\n
A baby who can lift their head has a different view during tummy time. A baby who can reach no longer has to wait for an object to be placed in their hand. Once sitting becomes steadier, toys can be picked up, dropped, turned over, and passed from hand to hand.<\/p>\n
Each new movement gives babies another way to interact with what is around them.<\/p>\n
During the earliest weeks, babies are still developing basic head and body control.<\/p>\n
Around 1 month, movement is often reflexive, and babies continue to need plenty of head and neck support.<\/p>\n
By about 2 months, many briefly hold their head up during tummy time. They may also watch people move and spend more time looking at faces.<\/p>\n
Around 3 months, head control may become steadier. Babies may begin swiping toward nearby objects or bringing their hands toward their mouth.<\/p>\n
At this stage, exploration still happens mostly through looking, listening, and whatever happens to be close enough to touch.<\/p>\n
Around 4 months, many babies begin swinging an arm toward toys and holding an object placed in their hand.<\/p>\n
During 5 months, reaching may become more deliberate. A baby may notice something nearby and make repeated attempts to grab it.<\/p>\n
By around 6 months, many reach for a toy they want.<\/p>\n
That shift matters because babies are beginning to act on what interests them. Instead of simply watching an object, they can try to bring it closer and explore it for themselves.<\/p>\n
Rolling is another way babies begin changing their own position.<\/p>\n
Around the middle of the first year, stronger head and body control may lead to more twisting and weight shifting. By about 6 months, many babies roll from tummy to back and push up on straight arms.<\/p>\n
Some babies roll frequently. Others do it only occasionally before becoming more interested in sitting.<\/p>\n
Either way, changing position gives babies a different angle on the room and may bring something previously out of reach a little closer.<\/p>\n
Sitting brings another big change to play.<\/p>\n
Around 6 months, many babies begin supporting themselves while sitting, often leaning forward on their hands.<\/p>\n
During 7 and 8 months, balance may improve enough for longer stretches of upright play.<\/p>\n
By around 9 months, many babies sit without support and can get themselves into a sitting position.<\/p>\n
Once babies no longer need their hands primarily for balance, those hands are available for other things. A toy can be turned over, transferred to the other hand, or reached for from a different direction.<\/p>\n
Mobility often becomes especially noticeable during the second half of the first year.<\/p>\n
Some babies crawl on hands and knees. Others scoot, creep, roll, or come up with another way of moving toward something interesting.<\/p>\n
There is no single required route.<\/p>\n
Crawling is also not an official 9-month milestone. At that age, sitting without support and getting into a seated position are among the expected movement milestones.<\/p>\n
For parents, the more useful thing to notice is how a baby is gaining greater control over position and movement over time.<\/p>\n
Movement also becomes more precise on a smaller scale.<\/p>\n
By around 9 months, many babies transfer objects between their hands and bang two objects together. They may also look for something after it falls out of sight.<\/p>\n
That can turn a simple toy into a small experiment.<\/p>\n
What happens if I drop it? Can I reach it again? What does it sound like when I bang these together? Babies are not asking those questions in words, but their movements give them a way to find out.<\/p>\n
Around 10 and 11 months, some babies become more comfortable changing positions or begin pulling themselves upward.<\/p>\n
By about 12 months, many pull to stand and move while holding onto furniture. That new height changes what they can see and how they approach the room.<\/p>\n
Other milestones near the first birthday may include waving goodbye, playing simple interactive games, understanding \u201cno,\u201d using \u201cmama,\u201d \u201cdada,\u201d or another special name meaningfully, and picking up a small object with the thumb and pointer finger.<\/p>\n
Independent walking is not required by 12 months.<\/p>\n

The months between official developmental checkpoints are general patterns, not requirements for every baby.<\/p>\n
Babies do not need elaborate activities to explore. A safe place to move, something interesting to reach toward, or a familiar caregiver nearby can create plenty of opportunities to use a developing skill.<\/p>\n
