One of the biggest goals as a parent is to raise confident, patient, and responsible people. For young children, these aren\u2019t skills that develop overnight but are built through little moments that happen throughout their day. Ordinary things like allowing them to put on their own shoes, clean up their toys, or help pick out an outfit can give them opportunities to practice independence. These tasks may take longer in their hands, but giving them the chance to try things on their own shows them you trust their ability to figure things out. <\/span><\/p>\n

Confidence can grow when children are encouraged to try new things without the concerns of perfection. When they make mistakes like knocking over a block tower, instead of immediately stepping in, parents can encourage a second attempt. Focusing on their effort to keep trying can help a child understand that their mistakes are a part of learning instead of something to fear. Patience is another skill that requires practice, such as waiting their turn for an activity, for dinnertime to come around, or listening while another person is speaking. When parents acknowledge that abiding by time is hard, it can encourage children to persevere on their own. <\/span><\/p>\n

Responsibility is able to grow in the same way when you give children age-appropiate jobs like cleaning after themselves, or helping <\/span>set the table<\/span><\/a> can help them understand their important role in the family and give them opportunities to feel proud of their accomplishments.
