Potty training can feel overwhelming, especially when families are unsure when to begin. Research shows that age alone isn’t the best indicator of readiness, and starting too early or too late can actually slow the process. Because every child develops at their own pace, recognizing readiness signs matters more than following a timeline.
Studies, including recent research published by SAGE Journals, have identified common indicators that suggest a child may be ready. These include staying dry after naps, showing interest in the toilet, communicating needs, following simple directions, pulling clothing up and down, and wanting to stay clean. Other signs may include imitation, sitting still briefly, understanding potty-related words, and pride in completing tasks independently.
At Celebree School of Stafford, we partner with families to follow each child’s lead. Potty training isn’t a race. When children feel supported and developmentally ready, the process becomes more positive for everyone.
