A 4-month-old can be surprisingly determined. You may put your baby down for floor play, turn away for a moment, and notice they have somehow shifted a little farther than where they started.<\/p>\n
That can make you wonder, when do babies start crawling? Most babies do not truly crawl at 4 months, but early movement can sometimes look a lot like the beginning of it. Pushing, kicking, rocking, and reaching can all create small changes in position as babies learn what their bodies can do.<\/p>\n
Crawling at 4 months would be considered early.<\/p>\n
At this age, babies are usually still building the strength and coordination that support later mobility. They may push up, kick, twist, or move a short distance without using a recognizable crawling pattern.<\/p>\n
So, if your baby seems to be \u201ctrying to crawl,\u201d you may be seeing the early building blocks of movement rather than a full crawl.<\/p>\n
Many babies begin crawling around 7 to 10 months, although timing varies. Some start earlier. Others take longer or use a different way to get around.<\/p>\n
At 4 months, there is no need to expect crawling yet. There is already plenty happening before that stage arrives.<\/p>\n
Floor play gives babies a chance to experiment.<\/p>\n
Your baby may push against the surface with their feet, kick both legs, twist their body, or pull forward slightly with their arms. A few of those movements together can shift them across the floor.<\/p>\n
From a parent’s point of view, that may look like the start of crawling even though your baby is still figuring out basic balance and coordination.<\/p>\n
One movement you may notice around this age is a stronger push during tummy time.<\/p>\n
Your baby may lift their head and chest while supporting themselves on their elbows or forearms. That takes effort and helps them experience what it feels like to support more of their body weight.<\/p>\n
It may not move them across the room, but it can make floor play look much more active than it did a few weeks earlier.<\/p>\n
Some babies get especially energetic on their stomachs.<\/p>\n
They may kick their legs, rock their body, wave their arms, or make motions that look a little like swimming. Those movements may keep them in one spot or inch them forward, backward, or sideways.<\/p>\n
Your baby does not need to be going anywhere yet for that exploration to matter.<\/p>\n
It can be tempting to decide whether every new motion \u201ccounts\u201d as crawling.<\/p>\n
You do not have to.<\/p>\n
A small scoot, wiggle, pivot, or push can simply be part of your baby’s growing interest in movement. There is no benefit to trying to turn those early motions into a milestone before your baby is ready.<\/p>\n
The change itself is worth noticing.<\/p>\n
You do not need crawling exercises for a 4-month-old.<\/p>\n
Supervised floor time, tummy time, reaching for safe toys, and room to kick and move are enough. Let your baby experiment with what feels natural rather than trying to position them into a crawl.<\/p>\n
The next stage will come when their balance, strength, coordination, and curiosity are ready to work together.<\/p>\n
If your baby loses a skill they previously had, seems unusually stiff or floppy, or something about their movement concerns you, talk with your pediatrician.<\/p>\n
You do not need to compare your baby with another child or wait for a certain month before asking a question.<\/p>\n
At 4 months, there is already plenty to notice before crawling enters the picture. A stronger push during floor play, a new reach, or a burst of kicking can make one week look very different from the last.<\/p>\n
