How Do I Know If My Child Is Ready for Childcare?

As a leadership team, we have experienced this significant transition with families time and time again, so we understand how emotionally taxing it can be. Whether or not this is your child’s first time attending school, moving forward can be a mixture of excitement and anxiety. Although every child grows at a different rate, you can tell when they’re ready for this new experience by looking for a few subtle clues.

Comfort With Short Separations

Your child’s ability to tolerate brief separations from you is one of the first indications that they may be ready. Consider this: Can they play or explore while temporarily staying with a friend, grandparent, or sitter? The fact that they are learning to feel safe in unfamiliar situations is more important than whether it is flawless every time. At Celebree School of Owings Mills, we take pride in being the ones to help  young children develop that trust and confidence.

Following Simple Directions

Simple routines form the core of our day, from snack time to circle time. Your child is starting to grasp structure and cooperation when they can follow simple instructions like “let’s clean up” or “sit down for lunch.” And it’s okay if they’re still learning; our teachers are here to support and guide each child in their own unique way.

Routine = Comfort

Predictability is what kids love. Your child will adjust to school more readily if they are accustomed to having meal, nap, and playtime schedules. We advise parents to begin practicing daily routines with their children at a young age because it gives them a sense of security and understanding about what to expect each day.

Communicating Their Needs

At this age, communication looks different for everyone, especially a child. Being able to communicate when they are hungry, tired, or in need of some help is a great indication of readiness, regardless of whether they use words, gestures, or facial expressions. Our teachers are experts at spotting these signs and assisting young children in discovering their voices, both literally and figuratively!

You’re Part of the Journey Too

We understand that this shift affects you as well as your child. Finding yourself emotional or unsure is entirely normal, and we are here to support you at every turn. It is important to always remember that this next step is a team effort. When educators and families collaborate, children sense that comfortability, which allows them to feel confident and flourish.
