A newborn’s hands may spend much of the day curled into fists. By the first birthday, those same hands may be picking up a small piece of food, dropping a block into a container, waving goodbye, or pointing toward something interesting.

That progression from early reaching to more precise grasping is only one part of baby development during the first year, but it offers a useful look at how movement, vision, thinking, and communication begin working together. The CDC tracks developmental milestones at 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months, while the skills behind them often build gradually from one stage to the next.

During the newborn stage, much of a baby’s movement is reflexive. Hands are often fisted, and movements are not yet very controlled.

Over the next few months, you may notice the hands opening more often. Your baby may spend longer looking at faces and nearby objects, move their arms more deliberately, and begin swiping toward something within reach.

By about 2 months, many babies are also smiling in response to interaction, making sounds besides crying, watching people move, and briefly holding their head up during tummy time.

Around 3 months, early reaching may become easier to spot. What looks like a simple swipe toward a toy is part of a larger shift toward more controlled movement.

Around 4 to 6 months, babies often become much more active with their hands.

A toy is no longer something to simply look at. Your baby may reach toward it, grab it, bring it closer, turn it around, or bring it to their mouth for exploration.

You may notice your baby:

These changes develop alongside other milestones. Head control becomes steadier, rolling may begin, sitting with support becomes more comfortable, and interaction often includes more laughter and back-and-forth sounds.

Purposeful reaching and grasping usually become more noticeable during the early-to-middle months of infancy.

Before a steady grab, your baby may swipe, miss, touch an object briefly, or close their fingers around it for only a moment. Coordination becomes more accurate with time and experience.

There is no need to compare one baby’s grasping with another’s. The broader pattern of growing control matters more than one exact date.

Later in the first year, babies often become more skilled at using both hands during play.

As sitting becomes steadier, the hands are freer to explore. A baby who once needed both hands for balance may now sit and manipulate a toy at the same time.

Between roughly 7 and 9 months, you may notice your baby passing an object from one hand to the other, banging two objects together, rotating a toy, or deliberately dropping something and reaching for it again.

Other baby milestones are developing alongside these changes. Many babies sit without support by this stage, become more mobile, babble with repeated sounds, respond to their name, and look for an object that disappears from view.

The ability to use both hands more freely often changes play in a noticeable way. Babies are no longer simply holding objects. They are experimenting with what those objects do.

As the first birthday gets closer, finger movements often become more refined.

Instead of using the whole hand to scoop up an object, your baby may begin using individual fingers more effectively. You may see more pointing, waving, clapping, placing objects into containers, and manipulating toys with greater precision.

The pincer grasp is the ability to pick up a small object using the thumb and forefinger.

It typically develops toward the later part of the first year and is one of the fine-motor skills often associated with the 12-month stage.

By about 12 months, babies may also:

Independent walking is not required by the first birthday. Some babies walk earlier, while others reach that milestone later.

Reaching and grasping depend on several abilities working together.

A baby first needs to notice an object, judge where it is, move the arm toward it, position the body, and coordinate the fingers well enough to grasp it. Later, hand movements also become part of communication through gestures such as waving and pointing.

That is why a seemingly small change, such as transferring a toy between hands, reflects several areas of development working together.

Reaching and grasping are only one part of the picture.

In the early months, babies gain more head control, become more alert, smile socially, and begin cooing. By the middle of the first year, rolling, supported sitting, laughter, and vocal turn-taking often become more noticeable.

Later, many babies sit independently, move around in their own way, respond to their name, babble repeatedly, use gestures, and begin pulling to stand or cruising.

The timing and order of these skills vary. Milestones are useful guideposts, not a schedule every baby follows in exactly the same way.

Babies learn a great deal simply by having time and space to interact with their surroundings.

A safe toy placed within reach gives your baby a reason to stretch and grasp. A board book offers pages to touch and turn. Supervised floor time gives the whole body room to move while the hands reach, push, hold, and explore.

There is no need to turn play into a lesson or hurry toward the next skill. Ordinary exploration provides plenty of opportunities to use emerging abilities.

Babies use their developing skills throughout the day, whether they are holding a toy during a song, reaching during floor play, or exploring an object with both hands.
