A newborn generally stays wherever you place them. A few months later, that same baby may roll onto their side to get a better look at something. Before the first birthday, they may be sitting up, scooting across the floor, crawling, or pulling themselves to stand.<\/p>\n
Mobility develops little by little during the first year. Babies first gain control over their own bodies, then begin changing positions and eventually find ways to get where they want to go.<\/p>\n
These baby milestones can help you understand that progression, but they are guideposts rather than a schedule every child will follow exactly.<\/p>\n
During the earliest months, babies are still learning to control their head and body.<\/p>\n
Around 1 month, much of their movement is reflexive. They need plenty of support for the head and neck and rely on caregivers to change their position.<\/p>\n
By about 2 months, many babies briefly hold their head up during tummy time.<\/p>\n
Around 3 months, head control may become steadier. Babies may also begin swiping toward objects or bringing their hands toward their mouth.<\/p>\n
These movements may not look like mobility yet, but they build the body control babies will need to roll, sit, and eventually move from place to place.<\/p>\n
During the middle of the first year, babies often become more capable of shifting their weight and repositioning themselves.<\/p>\n
Around 4 months, many hold their head steady and push up on their elbows or forearms during tummy time.<\/p>\n
By about 5 months, rolling attempts may become more noticeable.<\/p>\n
Around 6 months, many babies roll from tummy to back and push up with straight arms.<\/p>\n
Rolling gives babies something they did not have in the newborn stage: a way to change where their body is without an adult moving them first.<\/p>\n
Some babies roll frequently, while others do it less often before becoming interested in sitting or another type of movement.<\/p>\n
Sitting also develops in stages.<\/p>\n
Around 6 months, many babies begin supporting themselves while seated, often leaning forward on their hands.<\/p>\n
During 7 and 8 months, balance may become steadier. Babies may sit for longer and start reaching toward toys without immediately tipping over.<\/p>\n
By around 9 months, many babies sit without support and can get themselves into a sitting position.<\/p>\n
That ability to move into a seated position is especially meaningful for mobility. Instead of simply staying where they were placed, babies are gaining greater control over what position comes next.<\/p>\n
Crawling often gets plenty of attention from parents, but there is no single month when every baby should start.<\/p>\n
Some babies begin crawling during the second half of the first year. Others scoot on their bottom, creep along the floor, roll toward what they want, or come up with another way to get around.<\/p>\n
Some babies also spend relatively little time crawling before becoming more interested in pulling up.<\/p>\n
Crawling is not an official 9-month milestone. At that age, sitting without support and getting into a seated position are among the movement milestones parents may notice.<\/p>\n
So, if another baby the same age is crawling and yours is not, that difference alone does not tell you whether development is on track.<\/p>\n
There is more than one way for a baby to become mobile.<\/p>\n
One baby may spend weeks crawling on hands and knees. Another may scoot across the floor. A baby who rolls frequently might use that movement to reach something nearby before developing another method.<\/p>\n
What often changes over time is the baby’s ability to decide where they want to go and then use their growing skills to get there.<\/p>\n
Around 9 and 10 months, mobility may become especially noticeable for some babies. A favorite toy across the room or a familiar caregiver nearby may provide plenty of motivation to experiment.<\/p>\n
During 10 and 11 months, some babies begin trying to move upward instead of only across the floor.<\/p>\n
They may kneel next to furniture, push through their legs, or experiment with pulling themselves to a standing position.<\/p>\n
By around 12 months, many babies pull to stand and move while holding onto furniture.<\/p>\n
Standing also brings a new challenge: getting back down. Early attempts can look unsteady as babies learn how to bend, shift their weight, and return to the floor.<\/p>\n
Independent walking does not need to happen by the first birthday. Cruising along furniture, crawling, or using another method of movement may still be a baby’s preferred way to get around.<\/p>\n

The months between official developmental checkpoints describe common patterns, not requirements every baby must meet at that exact age.<\/p>\n
The first year is not only about physical mobility.<\/p>\n
By around 9 months, many babies also look when their name is called, make repeated sounds, transfer objects between their hands, and lift their arms when they want to be picked up.<\/p>\n
By the first birthday, they may wave goodbye, play simple interactive games, understand a familiar word such as \u201cno,\u201d or use \u201cmama,\u201d \u201cdada,\u201d or another special name meaningfully.<\/p>\n
All of these developments give babies more ways to engage with people and their surroundings, whether or not they are crawling or walking yet.<\/p>\n
Babies have many chances to practice movement during ordinary parts of the day. Tummy time allows a young infant to work on head and upper-body control. Floor play gives an older baby room to roll, sit, or experiment with getting around.<\/p>\n
