Crawling is often talked about as one of the big milestones of a baby\u2019s first year. That can make it confusing when parents learn that crawling does not appear on the CDC\u2019s current 9-month milestone checklist.<\/p>\n
So, is crawling actually a milestone? In a broad developmental sense, crawling is an important gross motor skill. But it is not a skill every baby must demonstrate in the same way or by one specific age.<\/p>\n
Developmental checklists are useful, but they are not a complete map of everything your baby may learn.<\/p>\n
At 9 months, the CDC focuses on movement skills such as sitting without support and getting into a sitting position. Crawling is not included as a required milestone at that age.<\/p>\n

You do not need to teach a specific crawling technique.<\/p>\n
Supervised floor time gives your baby space to reach, turn, push, roll, scoot, or crawl in whatever way makes sense to them. A toy placed nearby can give them something interesting to move toward without turning the activity into a lesson.<\/p>\n
As your baby becomes more mobile, revisit babyproofing too. Even a child who is not crawling traditionally may suddenly reach parts of the room that were previously out of range.<\/p>\n
There is no need to wait for a checklist to tell you when a question is worth asking.<\/p>\n
Talk with your child\u2019s pediatrician if your baby loses a skill they previously had, consistently uses one side of the body differently, seems unusually stiff or floppy, or you have another concern about how they are moving.<\/p>\n
Your pediatrician can consider crawling as one part of your child\u2019s overall development rather than judging progress by one movement alone.<\/p>\n
Babies learn a great deal simply by having time and space to explore.<\/p>\n
