Why Healthy Matters:
By providing healthy snacks to children you are allowing for:
- Strong brain development
- Energy for active play and learning
- Strong developing bodies
- Healthy eating habits for the future
How do I know if I am giving my child a healthy snack?
When providing your child with a healthy snack, two different food groups should be combined and such as:
- Protein (such as yogurt, cheese, or eggs)
- Fruits or vegetables
- Healthy fats
- Whole grains
Enjoyable Snacks!
There are so many different snacks you can provide that are enjoyable and fun to eat, here are some examples:
Cheese and whole-grain crackers
Making your own “lunchable”- providing different types of cheeses as well
Different foods with hummus
Providing carrots, celery, broccoli, with humus to make a colorful snack
Yogurt with fresh fruit
Mix different fruits with plain yogurt, make a “fruit on the bottom” type style
Smoothies
Using all different types of fruits and maybe even veggies!
Some encouraging tips for healthy eating:
Offer variety.
Allow your child different variations of food; even allow them to go grocery shopping with you to see different foods!
Smaller portions.
Preschoolers do best with small servings that they can manage independently.
Make snacks fun.
Cut fruits and vegetables into fun shapes or serve them in colorful snack cups.
Model for your child.
Children at times want what adults are eating; show them the healthy foods you like to eat.
