A newborn has very little control over what their hands do. By the first birthday, that same baby may be picking up a tiny piece of food between their thumb and pointer finger.

A lot happens in between.

Throughout the first year, babies gradually become better at reaching for what interests them, holding objects, moving them from one hand to the other, and eventually using their fingers with much more precision. These baby milestones develop over time, and the timing will look a little different for every child.

In the first few months, babies are still learning how their arms and hands move.

You may notice your baby bringing their hands toward their face or watching them more closely as the weeks pass.

By around 4 months, many babies bring their hands to their mouth and look at their hands with interest. They may also hold a toy when it is placed in their hand.

These early movements may seem simple, but they are the beginning of much more controlled reaching and grasping later in the year.

At about 4 months, many babies can hold onto a toy that someone places in their hand. They may also swing an arm toward something nearby.

At first, the movement may be broad or imprecise. Your baby might hit the toy instead of grabbing it or hold on only briefly.

That changes with practice. Over the next couple of months, reaching often starts looking more intentional.

By around 5 months, some babies are making clearer attempts to grab what catches their attention.

A toy just out of reach may prompt several tries. Your baby may watch it closely, stretch toward it, and adjust their hand until they make contact.

By about 6 months, many babies reach for a toy they want.

This is a noticeable shift from simply holding something that was handed to them. Babies are beginning to choose what they want to touch and act on that interest themselves.

Around the middle of the first year, sitting may also begin changing how babies play.

At first, a baby may need their hands for support while sitting. As balance improves, those hands become available for toys instead.

By around 7 or 8 months, a baby may sit and turn an object over, bring it closer for a better look, or reach in another direction without immediately losing their balance.

The steadier the sitting becomes, the easier it is to spend time exploring whatever is in their hands.

By around 9 months, many babies can transfer an object from one hand to the other.

They may also bang two objects together or use their fingers to rake a small piece of food toward themselves.

These are small movements, but they show how much control has changed since the early months.

A baby who once needed a toy placed directly into their palm may now pick it up, move it between their hands, and decide what to do with it next.

Dropping things becomes part of play for many babies later in the first year.

A toy gets released, falls to the floor, and then gets searched for or picked up again. Sometimes that sequence happens over and over.

What looks repetitive to an adult gives babies a chance to practice letting go, watching what happens, and trying again.

By around 9 months, many babies also look for something after it falls out of sight.

As the first birthday approaches, hand movements often become noticeably more controlled.

By around 12 months, many babies can pick up a small object using their thumb and pointer finger.

That is a big change from the broad reaching and whole-hand grasping seen earlier in infancy.

This growing precision may show up during supervised mealtimes, when a baby reaches for a small piece of food, or during play with safe objects that are appropriate for their age.

Here is a quick look at how reaching and object play may change during the first year:

The months between official developmental checkpoints describe common patterns rather than milestones every baby must meet at that exact age.

Babies are developing in many areas at once.

By around 6 months, many laugh, recognize familiar people, and take turns making sounds.

By about 9 months, they may respond to their name, sit without support, and use repeated sounds such as “mamamama” or “babababa.”

Near the first birthday, many wave goodbye, pull to stand, move while holding furniture, and use “mama,” “dada,” or another special name meaningfully.

A baby may make quick progress in one area while taking more time with another.

Babies have plenty of chances to practice reaching and holding during ordinary play. A safe toy nearby gives them something to reach toward, while sitting more steadily opens up new ways to examine what they are holding.
