One of the funny things about a baby’s first year is how fascinating their own body becomes. A newborn may move their arms and legs without much control. A few months later, they are staring at their hands, bringing them to their mouth, grabbing their feet, rolling across the floor, and reaching for anything interesting nearby.<\/p>\n
Those changes are part of a much broader story. Baby milestones develop across movement, communication, social connection, and learning, often with several abilities growing alongside one another. The ages below offer general guideposts rather than deadlines. Every baby follows an individual timeline.<\/p>\n
During the newborn stage, movements often look jerky or unpredictable. Hands are frequently held in fists, and babies are only beginning to develop control of the head and neck.<\/p>\n
By around 1 month, you may notice brief head lifts during tummy time, reactions to sounds, and short periods of looking at nearby faces.<\/p>\n
Around 2 months, many babies begin smiling in response to another person, making sounds besides crying, watching people move, and holding their head up briefly while on their tummy.<\/p>\n
By about 3 months, hands may stay open more often. Babies often bring their hands toward their face or mouth and begin making more deliberate movements toward nearby objects. Head control is also becoming steadier.<\/p>\n
There is no single day when babies suddenly realize they have hands.<\/p>\n
Awareness develops gradually during the early months as movements become more controlled. A baby may stare at their fingers, bring both hands together, or repeatedly move a hand toward the mouth.<\/p>\n
What looks like simple fascination is also practice. Your baby is learning where parts of their body are and gaining more control over how to move them.<\/p>\n
The middle of the first year often brings a noticeable jump in what babies are able to do with their bodies.<\/p>\n
Around 4 months, many babies hold their head more steadily, bring their hands to their mouth, reach toward toys, chuckle, and make sounds back when someone talks to them.<\/p>\n
By around 5 months, reaching often becomes more accurate. Rolling may begin, and babies may spend more time touching their knees, legs, or feet.<\/p>\n
At about 6 months, many babies roll, reach for something they want, bring objects to the mouth, laugh, take turns making sounds, and sit with support or by leaning forward on their hands.<\/p>\n
Grasping develops over time.<\/p>\n
Early reaching may involve swiping at a toy or touching it without holding on. During the middle months, babies generally become more successful at closing their fingers around objects and keeping hold of them.<\/p>\n
Once they can grasp something, they tend to investigate it thoroughly: looking, turning, shaking, squeezing, and bringing it toward the mouth.<\/p>\n
Many babies become interested in their feet during the middle months, often around 4 to 6 months.<\/p>\n
You may see your baby lift their legs, grab their toes, or pull their feet toward the mouth while lying on their back. Some babies spend a lot of time doing this, while others barely seem interested.<\/p>\n
Grabbing the feet is not a required milestone on its own. It is one example of growing coordination, flexibility, and awareness of the body.<\/p>\n
Rolling is different from simply moving an arm or leg. It requires the head, shoulders, trunk, hips, and limbs to work together.<\/p>\n
Rolling often appears during the middle months of the first year, although timing varies.<\/p>\n
Some babies roll from tummy to back first. Others begin by rolling from back to tummy. A baby might also roll once unexpectedly and then go several days before doing it again.<\/p>\n
As rolling becomes more intentional, it gives babies another way to change their position and reach something they want to explore.<\/p>\n
By the second half of the first year, babies often have much more control over their posture and hands.<\/p>\n
Around 7 months, sitting may become steadier. Babies often transfer toys between hands and experiment with a wider range of babbling sounds.<\/p>\n
By around 8 months, many babies reach confidently in different directions while sitting, handle toys with both hands, and begin finding their own ways to move around.<\/p>\n
At about 9 months, many babies sit without support, move objects from one hand to the other, look when their name is called, make repeated sounds such as \u201cmamamama\u201d or \u201cbabababa,\u201d and lift their arms to be picked up.<\/p>\n
Sitting usually develops in stages.<\/p>\n
A baby may first sit while supported by you or a cushion, then lean forward onto their hands for balance. Gradually, the trunk becomes strong and steady enough to sit without that extra help.<\/p>\n
Sitting also changes play. With the body more stable, both hands are freer to hold, reach, bang, pass, and examine objects.<\/p>\n
Later in infancy, body awareness expands beyond figuring out what hands and feet can do.<\/p>\n
Babies begin using their whole body to get somewhere.<\/p>\n
Some crawl on hands and knees. Others scoot, creep, roll, or move in another way. There is plenty of normal variation in how babies become mobile.<\/p>\n
As they gain more control, they also begin transitioning between positions. A baby may move from sitting to the floor, reach across the body for a toy, or pull up using sturdy furniture.<\/p>\n
Movement becomes increasingly purposeful because babies have somewhere they want to go or something they want to investigate.<\/p>\n
Near the first birthday, many earlier skills begin working together.<\/p>\n
Around 10 months, some babies pull to stand, move more easily between positions, and use gestures such as reaching or an emerging wave.<\/p>\n
At about 11 months, cruising along furniture may appear. Hand control also becomes more precise, making it easier to pick up smaller objects. Babies often imitate familiar actions and show clearer understanding of words and routines.<\/p>\n
By 12 months, many babies:<\/p>\n
Some babies are also taking independent steps by this point, while others are still crawling or cruising. Walking independently is not required by the first birthday.<\/p>\n
Hands and feet may make this development especially easy to see, but babies are learning much more at the same time.<\/p>\n
Reaching toward a caregiver communicates a want. Sitting gives a baby a new view of the room. Crawling allows them to choose what to investigate. Babbling and gestures make interactions more social.<\/p>\n
Physical, cognitive, communication, and social development often overlap during the same ordinary moment.<\/p>\n
A baby reaching for a toy, for example, may be using vision to locate it, body control to lean toward it, hand coordination to grasp it, and curiosity to keep exploring once it is in hand.<\/p>\n
Babies benefit from safe time to move, explore, and interact without being rushed toward the next skill.<\/p>\n
