A toy that used to stay right in front of your baby may suddenly end up several feet away. Your baby might roll after it, scoot closer, or crawl across the floor to retrieve it. Once babies become mobile, play changes right along with them.

If you’re wondering when do babies start crawling, many babies master traditional crawling between about 7 and 10 months. Others get around by scooting, belly crawling, rolling, or using another method.

As your baby begins exploring independently, you don’t need a collection of special activities to encourage their development. Some of the best play for a new crawler is surprisingly simple.

Try placing a favorite toy a short distance away instead of handing it directly to your baby. That small gap gives them a reason to decide what to do next. They may lean forward, pivot, scoot, roll, or crawl toward it.

CDC guidance for 9-month-olds recommends placing toys on the ground or a play mat slightly out of reach and encouraging babies to crawl, scoot, or roll to get them.

The key word here is slightly.

You don’t need to keep moving the toy farther away as soon as your baby gets close. Let them have the satisfaction of reaching it. This is play, not a challenge they have to complete.

You may be much more interesting to your baby than any toy in the room.

Sit a few feet away and talk to them. Smile, stretch out your hands, or move to another nearby spot once they’ve reached you. The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages adults to get down on the floor and join babies in play as they become more mobile.

There’s no need to coax your baby across an entire room.

They may crawl halfway to you, become distracted by a sock, sit down, and forget what they were doing. That’s part of play, too.

Peek-a-boo doesn’t have to stay in one place.

Once your baby is moving, try partially hiding behind a nearby cushion or playing from another spot on the floor. You can also place a safe toy partly under a cloth and let your baby investigate where it went.

CDC includes peek-a-boo and simple hide-and-find play among activities families can try during this developmental period.

Your baby may crawl over immediately. They may study the situation first. They may decide something else is far more interesting. Follow their lead.

Search for “baby crawling toys” and you’ll find plenty of products promising to get babies moving. Your baby doesn’t need a toy specifically marketed for crawling.

A soft ball, favorite book, stuffed animal, or other age-appropriate object can give a mobile baby something interesting to investigate. Even ordinary interaction with you can be enough motivation.

AAP suggests presenting babies with intriguing objects just beyond their reach as one way to encourage exploration.

Rather than asking, “What toy will make my baby crawl?” consider what already holds your baby’s attention. That’s usually a much easier place to start.

Adults can plan an activity. Babies rarely feel obligated to follow the plan.

You may put a toy across the mat because you’re sure your baby will crawl toward it, only to watch them turn around and inspect the edge of a blanket instead.

That’s fine.

A baby’s motivation to move often comes from curiosity. When something captures their attention, give them a little room to investigate it safely.

You don’t need to redirect every play session toward crawling. Reaching, rolling, changing position, handling an object, looking closely, and interacting with you all have a place in ordinary infant play.

Once parents know their baby is approaching a new milestone, it can be easy to start watching for progress every time they’re on the floor.

How far did they go today? Did they use their knees? Are they faster than yesterday?

You don’t need to measure play that way.

Your baby might crawl across the room one afternoon and spend most of the next day sitting in one place exploring a book. New skills don’t have to be practiced constantly once they appear.

Give your baby opportunities to move without expecting a particular result from each activity.

Your baby doesn’t have to be crawling yet to enjoy this kind of play.

Place an object nearby and they may reach for it. Put it a little farther away and they may roll, pivot, or scoot. Sit nearby and they may try to shift their body toward you.

CDC deliberately includes crawling, scooting, and rolling when suggesting ways babies can move toward toys.

That makes these activities useful across several stages of early mobility without turning crawling into something your baby has to achieve before play can become more active.

At Celebree School of Lutherville, infants have opportunities to develop physical skills within comforting daily routines and an environment that supports exploration. The school also emphasizes consistent communication, with parents receiving updates about their child’s experiences and progress.

That can make everyday changes easier to notice.

One infant may reach toward an object from a seated position. Another may roll to get closer. A new crawler may spot something interesting and make their way across the floor.

Teachers can offer age-appropriate opportunities to move and observe how each infant approaches them without pushing children toward a milestone before they’re ready.

Once crawling begins, you may discover that you don’t have to invent many activities at all. Your baby’s growing curiosity will take care of quite a bit.

Get down on the floor. Put something interesting nearby. Play peek-a-boo. Let your baby come to you. And when the carefully planned activity gets abandoned for something completely unexpected, follow along for a while.
