Around 8 months, your baby may seem much more involved in everything happening around them. Sitting may be steadier. Toys are easier to reach and handle. Babbling may fill more of the day, and your baby may be experimenting with new ways to move.<\/p>\n
Eight months is not an official developmental checkpoint with a fixed list of skills every baby should have. It falls between the 6- and 9-month milestones, making it a useful time to notice how earlier abilities are becoming stronger and more coordinated.<\/p>\n
Every baby develops differently, so these baby milestones are general guideposts rather than deadlines.<\/p>\n
At this age, several developing abilities often begin working together.<\/p>\n
A baby who once needed help staying upright may now sit and play for longer stretches. Reaching becomes more controlled, so toys can be picked up, passed between hands, or examined from different angles.<\/p>\n
Some babies are starting to get around by crawling, scooting, rolling, or another method. Others are perfectly content sitting and exploring whatever is nearby.<\/p>\n

Around 7 months, sitting may become more stable. Babies often spend more time handling toys and may start shifting their weight to reach in a new direction.<\/p>\n

Sitting is one of the clearest examples of how a milestone develops in stages.<\/p>\n
At first, babies may need support or lean forward on their hands to balance. As control improves, they may remain upright for longer and use both hands during play.<\/p>\n
Around 7 to 8 months, a baby may reach sideways for a toy, turn toward a sound, or sit and examine an object without immediately tipping over.<\/p>\n
By around 9 months, many babies sit without support and can get themselves into a sitting position.<\/p>\n
There is a meaningful difference between being placed in a seated position and independently moving into one, which is why sitting does not happen as a single moment.<\/p>\n

These actions may look simple, but they reflect growing coordination and curiosity.<\/p>\n
By about 9 months, transferring objects between hands and banging two objects together are common milestones.<\/p>\n
Movement tends to get a lot of attention during this stage, but communication is changing too.<\/p>\n
During 7 and 8 months, babies may experiment with a wider range of sounds or repeat syllables during play.<\/p>\n
By around 9 months, many babies make strings such as \u201cmamamama\u201d or \u201cbabababa\u201d and look when their name is called.<\/p>\n
Babbling does not need to sound the same from one baby to another. Some are especially vocal, while others communicate more through movement, facial expressions, or quieter sounds.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead to 9 months helps put the 8-month stage in context. By around 9 months, many babies:<\/p>\n
A baby at 8 months may already be doing some of these things and still be working toward others. That is normal. Development rarely changes on the exact day a baby reaches a new month.<\/p>\n
Between 10 and 11 months, babies often become more mobile and more deliberate in how they use sounds and gestures.<\/p>\n
Some begin pulling up, moving along furniture, or experimenting with familiar gestures. Object handling may also become more precise.<\/p>\n
By around 12 months, many babies wave goodbye, play simple interactive games, pull to stand, move while holding furniture, and pick up small objects with the thumb and pointer finger.<\/p>\n
They may also use \u201cmama,\u201d \u201cdada,\u201d or another special name meaningfully and understand a familiar word such as \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n
Independent walking is not required by the first birthday.<\/p>\n
Babies develop through ordinary experiences as much as through obvious milestone moments.<\/p>\n
Floor play offers room to sit, reach, shift position, or experiment with movement. A familiar toy gives a baby something to handle in new ways as coordination improves.<\/p>\n
