How We Foster Mathematical Thinking

We know the importance of early math skills and that’s why, from the start, we place an emphasis on them. From counting fingers and toes to eventually measuring, recognizing patterns, and more, your child will gain the math skills that equip them for school and provide a solid foundation for life. Here’s how we do it.

How Our Day Care Instills Early Math Skills

We integrate the Seven Domains of Learning into our early childhood curriculum. One of the domains is Mathematical Thinking and through it, we’ll help your child learn:

Number sense. This includes understanding numbers and how they relate to each other. We help children learn this by applying real-world examples, like counting carrot sticks or crackers, as well as making paper chains to count days until a special event.
Measuring. Measurement is another key area we focus on; teaching children how to measure the length, size, weight, and amount of different physical objects. We also teach them how to measure time, from the hours in a day to the days of the week.
Spatial awareness. Through spatial awareness, we help children to understand concepts in early geometry, such as shapes and sizes, surfaces and solids, and points and lines. They’ll also learn other key concepts, like near and far.
Patterns. Another area we explore is patterns and what they mean. We start small, from helping children to recognize patterns on their clothes or in their day or routine, eventually building on these so they are able to see more complex patterns.

Whether we’re measuring, counting, or exploring patterns, our teachers always do this in a way that is fun and engaging for children. As a result, they will remain interested and motivated, helping them reach key milestones and develop a strong mathematical foundation for school and life.
