Nine months can feel like a milestone in more ways than one. Your baby may be sitting more steadily, reaching for everything in sight, or becoming much more determined to get where they want to go.<\/p>\n
If crawling has not happened yet, it is natural to wonder whether your baby is falling behind. For parents asking when do babies start crawling, many babies begin somewhere around 7 to 10 months. That means a 9-month-old who is not crawling may still be well within a common developmental range.<\/p>\n
Some 9-month-olds are already moving quickly across the floor. Others are just beginning to experiment with getting from one place to another.<\/p>\n

Crawling is only one way mobility can develop.<\/p>\n
It can be helpful to know that crawling itself is not currently on the CDC’s 9-month milestone checklist. At this age, the CDC looks at other movement skills, including sitting without support and getting into a sitting position.<\/p>\n
That does not make crawling unimportant. It simply means there is more to watch than whether your baby is moving across the room on hands and knees.<\/p>\n
Try to notice what has changed over the past few weeks. Your baby may be steadier, more coordinated, or finding new ways to reach and reposition themselves even if forward crawling has not started.<\/p>\n
Babies can be surprisingly inventive once they become interested in getting somewhere.<\/p>\n
One child may scoot across the floor while seated. Another may roll until they reach a toy. Some crawl on their bellies before getting onto hands and knees, while others spend more time working on sitting or pulling into new positions.<\/p>\n
There is no requirement that every baby follow the same sequence. What matters more is the overall picture of how your child is moving and gaining new abilities over time.<\/p>\n
You do not need to teach your baby how to crawl.<\/p>\n
A safe stretch of floor, a few interesting toys, and time to explore can give them plenty of opportunities to practice movement naturally. Put something appealing slightly out of reach and see what your baby decides to do.<\/p>\n
They might crawl toward it. They might scoot, roll, reach, or lose interest entirely. Those attempts still give your baby chances to work on balance, coordination, and changing positions.<\/p>\n
Not crawling at exactly 9 months does not automatically mean something is wrong. Still, you never need to wait for a particular age to bring up a concern with your pediatrician.<\/p>\n
It is especially worth having a conversation if your baby loses a skill they previously had, consistently uses one side of the body differently, seems unusually stiff or floppy, or you notice another change that worries you.<\/p>\n
Your pediatrician can look at your baby’s movement as part of their overall development rather than judging progress by crawling alone.<\/p>\n
At this age, growth can show up in small ways from one day to the next. Your baby may spend one morning trying to move toward a toy and another happily sitting in one spot while exploring what is already within reach.<\/p>\n
