Milestone guides often jump from 2 months to 4 months, then from 6 months to 9 months. Your baby, of course, keeps changing every day in between.

That is helpful to remember when following baby milestones during the first year. Development is continuous, even though milestone guides use specific ages as reference points. The CDC looks at milestones at 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months, but the weeks between those checkpoints are often when new abilities begin taking shape.

A newborn is adjusting to an entirely new world. Much of their movement is reflexive, head control is limited, and early responses often center on touch, sound, comfort, and close faces.

Around 1 month, babies often spend longer periods awake and alert. You may notice more active arm and leg movement or greater interest in your face and voice.

By about 2 months, common milestones include:

The first two months are a good example of why development is better viewed as a process than a date on the calendar. A social smile or steadier head does not usually appear without earlier periods of looking, listening, and practicing control.

At 3 months, babies are between two formal milestone checkpoints, but there is plenty to notice.

Head control often becomes steadier. Hands may stay open more often, and early swiping or reaching may appear. Coos and smiles may also become more frequent.

By about 4 months, babies often show greater control and interest in what is happening around them. Common changes include reaching toward toys, bringing hands to the mouth, holding the head more steadily, chuckling, and making sounds back when you interact.

Many of the abilities visible around 4 months have been building for weeks.

Stronger head control makes it easier to look around. Growing coordination makes reaching more purposeful. More attention to faces and voices makes interaction feel increasingly two-way.

The checkpoint marks a useful point to look at development, but it does not mean those abilities suddenly appeared at 4 months.

Around 5 months, you may notice your baby grasping objects more deliberately or spending longer examining them. Some babies begin rolling or sitting with support.

By 6 months, common milestones include:

That month between the 4- and 6-month checkpoints is often full of practice. Your baby may repeat the same movement many times, become steadier in a position, or show more interest in reaching, grabbing, and interacting.

Progress does not always look like a brand-new skill. Sometimes it looks like greater control over something your baby has already started doing.

There is a three-month stretch between the CDC’s 6- and 9-month milestone ages, and babies often change considerably during that time.

Around 7 months, sitting may become steadier, and reaching from a seated position may become easier. Babies often handle toys with more control and move objects between their hands.

At about 8 months, some babies begin exploring new ways to get around. Rolling, pivoting, scooting, belly-creeping, rocking, and crawling are all possibilities.

By 9 months, common milestones include:

A 7- or 8-month-old does not need to look like a 9-month-old simply because 9 months is the next milestone checkpoint.

Those middle months are often when skills become steadier or more consistent. Your baby may be sitting longer, experimenting with movement, becoming more expressive, or showing more interest in familiar people and routines. Development rarely follows a clean monthly schedule.

The final months of the first year often bring more purposeful movement, communication, and exploration.

Around 10 months, gestures and imitation may become easier to recognize. Babies may move toward something they want, use their hands more precisely, or repeat actions that get a response.

At about 11 months, familiar words and routines may prompt clearer reactions. Some babies begin pulling to stand or cruising along furniture.

By 12 months, common milestones include:

Independent walking is not required at the first birthday. Babies reach that milestone on different timelines.

A milestone guide is meant to help you follow your baby’s development over time. It is not a list of monthly assignments.

A 3-month-old is not expected to have mastered every 4-month milestone. A 7-month-old does not need to show every skill listed for 9 months.

Instead, look at the broader pattern. Is your baby gaining new ways to move, communicate, interact, and explore? Are familiar skills becoming steadier or more intentional?

That bigger picture is usually more useful than comparing one day or one skill with a date on a chart.

Babies do not need formal lessons between developmental checkpoints.

Supervised tummy time and floor play provide room to move and change position. Songs and conversation introduce sounds and back-and-forth interaction. Board books, safe toys, and everyday objects offer new things to look at, reach for, and explore.

Even familiar routines such as feeding or diaper changes provide opportunities for eye contact, listening, movement, and response.

These experiences do not need to be complicated. Babies learn through repetition, relationships, and time to explore at their own pace.
