Your baby may seem far more interested in pulling up on the couch than crawling across the floor. That can feel out of order, especially if you expected crawling to come first.

But babies do not all move through early motor skills in the same sequence. Some spend plenty of time crawling before standing. Others become fascinated with getting upright before they have done much crawling at all.

Yes. A baby may begin pulling up or practicing supported standing before traditional crawling becomes a regular part of their movement.

That does not automatically mean anything is wrong. Babies often focus on the movements that interest them most or help them reach something new.

Your child may spend one week trying to get onto their feet and the next experimenting more with floor movement.

Many babies begin crawling somewhere around 7 to 10 months, but both timing and technique can vary.

When parents ask when do babies start crawling, it is helpful to think of that range as a general guide rather than a schedule every baby has to follow.

Some babies crawl on hands and knees. Others belly crawl, scoot, roll, or use another way to move. A baby who becomes interested in standing early may also spend relatively little time crawling traditionally.

Not always.

Development can look much less orderly in real life than it does on a milestone chart. Your baby may work on sitting, crawling, pulling up, and standing during overlapping periods rather than completing one skill before beginning the next.

You may even see your baby switch priorities from day to day. One afternoon, standing may be all they want to practice. The next morning, they may spend most of their time reaching, rolling, or moving around on the floor.

Standing changes your baby’s view of the world.

Suddenly, there are new things to see and reach. The edge of the sofa, a sturdy piece of furniture, or your hands can become irresistible.

You do not need to redirect your baby toward crawling simply because standing showed up first. Instead, keep giving them opportunities for both upright movement and supervised floor exploration.

Floor time still lets babies reach, turn, shift their weight, change positions, and experiment with getting from one place to another.

Once your baby starts pulling to stand, your surroundings deserve another look.

Make sure furniture they can reach is stable and secure. Remove objects that could be pulled down, and keep tempting hazards out of reach.

Your baby may also figure out how to stand before they know how to lower themselves gracefully. That can lead to plenty of cautious squatting, sudden sitting, and requests for help getting back down.

Give them time to practice these transitions rather than rushing them toward the next skill.

Standing before crawling by itself is not automatically concerning.

Still, talk with your child’s pediatrician if your baby loses a skill they previously had, consistently uses one side of the body differently, seems unusually stiff or floppy, or you have another concern about how they are moving.

Your pediatrician can look at the broader pattern of development instead of one skill in isolation.

A baby who discovers standing may suddenly experience familiar surroundings in a completely new way.

At Celebree School of East Louisville, infants have opportunities for age-appropriate physical development, gross and fine motor experiences, and hands-on exploration throughout the day. Teachers can also share the new movements and changes they notice with families.

For one baby, that may mean crawling toward something interesting. For another, it may mean pulling up, looking around from a new height, and then returning to the floor to try something else.
