A baby can be fascinated by things adults barely notice: the sound of crinkling paper, your face moving closer, a toy just beyond reach, or a spoon that falls to the floor for the fifth time.

Those moments are part of how babies begin making sense of the world. During the first year, curiosity grows alongside movement, communication, social interaction, and early problem-solving. Baby milestones can help you recognize those changes without turning development into a checklist your child has to complete on a fixed schedule.

The CDC uses developmental milestone checkpoints at 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months. Between those ages, new abilities may gradually emerge as your baby becomes more alert, coordinated, and interested in what is happening around them.

A newborn has limited control over their body, but they are already responding to their surroundings. Close faces, voices, touch, movement, and comfort are all part of what they experience.

Around 1 month, your baby may spend slightly longer periods awake and alert. You may notice them looking more closely at faces or reacting to familiar sounds.

By about 2 months, common milestones include:

Around 3 months, your baby may become more expressive with coos and smiles. Head control often becomes steadier, hands may stay open more frequently, and early reaching or swiping toward objects may begin.

At this stage, curiosity often looks like attention. Your baby is spending more time noticing people, sounds, movement, and objects nearby.

By 4 months, babies often have more ways to interact with whatever catches their attention.

They may reach or swing toward toys, hold an object placed in their hand, bring their hands to their mouth, and turn toward the sound of your voice. During tummy time, stronger upper-body control may allow them to push onto their forearms.

You may also notice more social engagement. Smiles, chuckles, and sounds made in response to you can make everyday interaction feel much more two-way.

Around 5 months, exploration often becomes increasingly hands-on. Babies may grasp, shake, mouth, and examine safe objects while gaining better control over their movements.

By 6 months, common milestones include:

Gaining more physical control gives your baby new ways to investigate the things that interest them.

During the second half of the first year, babies often become active experimenters.

Around 7 months, your baby may sit more steadily, transfer toys between their hands, and spend longer examining objects. They might shake something that makes a noise, turn a toy over, or bring it closer for another look.

At about 8 months, mobility may begin expanding those possibilities. Some babies roll, scoot, creep, crawl, or find another way to get closer to something interesting.

By 9 months, common milestones include:

A toy dropped from the high chair once may be an accident. When it happens over and over, your baby may simply be fascinated by what happens next.

The object falls. It makes a sound. Someone picks it up. Then your baby gets another chance to watch the sequence.

Repetition is one way babies explore. What feels repetitive to you may still be interesting to a child who is learning what objects can do and how people respond.

As the first birthday approaches, your baby may become increasingly deliberate about how they interact with toys, people, and their environment.

Around 10 months, you may see more imitation, gestures, purposeful movement toward desired objects, and more precise use of the hands.

At about 11 months, some babies begin pulling up or cruising while holding furniture. Familiar routines may become easier to anticipate, and babbling may sound more varied.

By 12 months, common milestones include:

Independent walking is not required by the first birthday. Some babies walk earlier, while others begin later.

Adults tend to appreciate novelty. Babies often love doing the same thing again.

The same song may get the same smile every morning. Your baby may want to turn the same board-book page repeatedly or put the same block into a container again and again.

That repetition gives them another chance to experience something while their abilities are changing.

A familiar activity can also become different over time. A younger baby may simply watch you roll a ball. Months later, they may reach for it, push it away, crawl after it, or try to roll it back.

You do not need complicated toys or planned lessons to encourage curiosity.

Babies can explore during very ordinary parts of the day. A few simple examples include:

The goal is not to keep your baby entertained every minute. Giving them time, space, and responsive interaction can leave plenty of room for natural exploration.
