Once your baby starts rolling, pushing up, and reaching for everything nearby, it is natural to wonder what comes next.<\/p>\n
So, when do babies start crawling? Many babies begin crawling on their hands and knees around 7 to 10 months, although the timing can vary quite a bit. Some start earlier or later, and some use other ways to move before they walk.<\/p>\n
If crawling seems close, you may also be wondering whether there is anything you should be doing to help.<\/p>\n
Babies do not need formal crawling lessons. What helps most is having regular opportunities to move, explore, and practice using their bodies.<\/p>\n
That can include rolling toward a toy, pushing up during tummy time, shifting weight, reaching across the body, pivoting on the floor, or trying to move toward you.<\/p>\n
Those smaller movements help babies build strength and coordination over time. You can support the process without trying to put your baby into a specific crawling position or following a set of exercises.<\/p>\n
Supervised floor play gives babies space to figure out movement for themselves.<\/p>\n
A firm, safe area allows your baby to stretch, roll, push, reach, and change positions more freely than they can in a swing, seat, or other piece of baby equipment.<\/p>\n

Tummy time while your baby is awake and supervised helps strengthen the muscles used for many early movements.<\/p>\n
Your baby may begin by briefly lifting their head, then progress to pushing up through their arms, reaching for objects, or shifting their weight from side to side.<\/p>\n
These movements can support the strength and coordination babies use as they become more mobile.<\/p>\n
If your baby does not love tummy time, shorter sessions throughout the day may be more manageable. You can also get down at eye level, talk to them, or place something interesting where they can see it.<\/p>\n
Babies often have their own reasons for becoming mobile.<\/p>\n
It may be a favorite toy, your face across the room, a sibling nearby, or something completely ordinary that suddenly becomes fascinating.<\/p>\n
Try placing an interesting object where your baby can see it and reach toward it without putting it so far away that the experience becomes frustrating.<\/p>\n
Your baby may roll, scoot, stretch, or crawl toward it. The method matters less than the opportunity to experiment with movement.<\/p>\n
Not every baby moves toward traditional crawling in the same way.<\/p>\n
Some belly-crawl. Others scoot, roll, move backward first, or pull themselves forward with their arms. A small number of babies never spend much time crawling on hands and knees before moving on to pulling up, cruising, and eventually walking.<\/p>\n
That is why it helps to look at your baby\u2019s overall progress rather than one exact movement pattern.<\/p>\n
You may notice that they are becoming stronger, changing positions more easily, reaching farther, or finding new ways to get where they want to go.<\/p>\n
There is a broad range in how and when babies become mobile.<\/p>\n
If your baby is not crawling at the same age as another child, that alone does not tell you whether something is wrong. Some babies develop another way of moving, while others simply need more time. Pay attention to how your baby is progressing overall.<\/p>\n
If you are concerned about their movement, bring it up with your pediatrician. It is especially important to mention a loss of a skill your baby previously had or an ongoing difference in how they use the two sides of their body.<\/p>\n

Babies spend a lot of their waking hours moving, reaching, and testing what their bodies can do. A daycare environment should give them safe opportunities to do that throughout the day.<\/p>\n
