Your baby has been crawling for a little while, and then one day the movement changes. Their knees lift off the floor, their legs straighten, and suddenly they’re crossing the room on their hands and feet with their bottom in the air.

It may look unusual, but it has a name: bear crawling.

If you’re wondering when do babies start crawling, traditional crawling is commonly mastered around 7 to 10 months. Babies may use several other movement styles along the way, including the bear crawl. The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes this as one of the ways babies may get around.

A bear crawl is similar to traditional crawling, except the baby’s knees stay off the floor.

Instead of moving on hands and knees, your baby moves on hands and feet. Their hips may sit higher in the air, and their arms and legs can look fairly straight as they travel.

Some babies use this movement briefly. Others become impressively fast at it.

You may also see your baby alternate between bear crawling and a more familiar hands-and-knees crawl depending on where they’re going or what they’re trying to reach.

Yes.

Your baby has figured out how to move independently from one place to another, even though the technique looks different from the classic crawl.

AAP specifically includes bear crawling among several recognized crawling styles. Babies may also belly-crawl, scoot, roll, crab-crawl, or use traditional hands-and-knees movement.

The label matters less than the fact that your baby is learning how to navigate the space around them.

Usually, there is no reason to repeatedly reposition a baby simply because they have started crawling with their knees lifted.

Babies experiment with movement, and the method that works today may change again next week.

If your baby is safely exploring the floor, give them room to work with the movement they have discovered. You do not have to adjust their arms and legs to make the crawl look more traditional.

CDC guidance encourages giving babies safe opportunities to move toward toys by crawling, scooting, or rolling. The emphasis is on exploration rather than mastering one specific technique.

This is an understandable question. A baby who is suddenly up on their hands and feet can look much closer to standing than they did while crawling on their knees.

But bear crawling is not a reliable countdown to first steps.

Babies may become interested in several forms of movement around the same period. Crawling can overlap with pulling up, standing with support, and eventually cruising along furniture.

CDC lists pulling up to stand and walking while holding onto furniture among movement milestones expected by around 1 year.

Your baby may bear crawl and start pulling up soon afterward. They may also continue crawling for quite a while. One movement does not give you an exact prediction for when the next will happen.

A baby’s crawling technique does not have to stay consistent.

You might see hands-and-knees crawling across the carpet, bear crawling across another part of the room, and a quick drop to the belly when your baby gets tired.

That can make mobility especially interesting to watch.

Instead of deciding that your baby has permanently switched to a new style, notice how their movement changes as they encounter different surfaces, distances, and destinations.

What works best in one moment may not be what they use in the next.

Bear crawling itself is a recognized movement style. Still, parents should pay attention to how the whole body is working.

Notice whether your baby generally uses both sides of the body and whether both arms and legs participate in movement.

Also pay attention to changes over time. Your baby may become faster, begin transitioning between more positions, or start exploring upright movement.

If you notice that your baby consistently favors one side, loses a skill they previously had, or something about their movement concerns you, bring it up with your pediatrician.

You do not need to figure out whether something is medically significant before asking about it.

A bear-crawling baby can cover ground quickly.

Once mobility picks up, take another look at the spaces your baby can now reach. Objects that seemed safely out of range a week ago may suddenly be accessible.

Safe floor space also gives babies freedom to move without adults continually redirecting their technique.

Let your baby crawl toward something interesting, change direction, stop to investigate, and choose how they want to get there.

At this stage, the floor itself can become a big part of their everyday exploration.

At Celebree School of Ashburn Farm, infant teachers provide age-appropriate opportunities for babies to move and explore during the day.

One baby may be crawling on hands and knees. Another may suddenly start lifting their knees and moving on hands and feet, while someone else is still focused on rolling, sitting, or changing positions.

Teachers can notice those changes and share them with families so parents stay connected to the skills their baby is practicing.

The goal is not to make a baby’s crawl look a certain way or predict when walking will happen. It is to provide safe opportunities for movement and respond to where each child is developmentally.

A bear crawl may look surprising the first time you see it, but your baby has simply discovered another way to get where they want to go.

Give them room to move, watch how their technique changes, and enjoy seeing where that growing independence takes them next.
